Elton John Taking The Red Piano to Europe!

The Red Piano

Pianist, singer, songwriter, performer and ultimately musician: sir Elton Hercules John is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest performers the UK has ever produced. The very popular English pop singer will soon be embarking on the European leg of his successful Red Piano Tour! The Red Piano Tour was originally conceived on American soil at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip. After signing a rather lucrative agreement, Elton John started performing in Las Vegas in 2004. On 21 June 2008 he played his 200th show there! His new show features giant props as well as video montages. You can buy your ticket for the Elton John European Tour 2008 at various places on the web. I myself have bought tickets for the Elton John Red Piano Tour UK at Concertics.

Elton John

Before I continue to talk about the Elton John Tour Europe (The Red Piano Tour), I would like to tell you a little bit about the life and times of this artist. Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, England, in 1947. He started learning to play classical piano at the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 11 after winning a scholarship. He wasn’t a particularly keen pupil but he did rather well all the same. So well, in fact, that he was hired as a weekend pianist at a pub when he was only 15, playing pub favourites and Irish songs. Not much later he formed a band of his own, called Bluesology. With this band he did eventually support major American artists like The Isley Brothers and Long John Baldry but the group had limited success otherwise. The real big break came when he was united with budding lyricist Bernie Taupin by sheer chance. They started working together, releasing a series of albums which are now considered classic. Simply called ‘Elton John’, his first album contained the beautiful tracks “Border Song” and “Your Song”. Around this time he began to carve out his reputation as the pioneer of piano rock, imitating the legendary ‘wild man of rock’, Jerry Lee Lewis, during gigs. The album ‘Honky Chateau’ featured “Rocket Man”, among others, which was an immediate hit single. Elton John’s most legendary album is without doubt ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ from 1973: “Candle in the Wind”, “Saturday’s Alright for Fighting” are both songs from this LP that are still popular today. His live shows in the seventies were characterised by colourful, wild stage costumes and the decade itself by all-out hedonism. During the latter part of the seventies he managed to score hits with “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (a duet with Kiki Dee). The eighties were a turbulent period for Elton John: he married and divorced, battled with addictions to excessive quantities of food, alcohol and cocaine, and so on and so forth. Showing bravery in the face of adversity, he did have a hit with the song “I’m Still Standing”. The nineties saw him emerging as a bona fide songwriter for musicals: Aida and The Lion King are but a few examples which first come to mind. The 2000s may definitely be called a decade of collaboration for Elton John: he reunited with his old colleague Bernie Taupin and he worked with acts as diverse as boy band Blue, Eminem, Guns ‘n’ Roses and the Pet Shop Boys: it was evident Sir Elton John was coming into his own as the godfather of eclectic rock ‘n’ roll.
